Mommy Veins – How Pregnancy Affects Your Varicose Veins

Are You Getting Mommy Veins?

Hello, we’re Kavic Laser & Vein Center and we can make your legs look beautiful again!

If you’re a Mom, have you noticed that your veins in your legs have started to bulge?

Maybe they have even started aching more as the day goes on.

Varicose veins are usually inherited. Pregnancy just speeds up the development of your Mommy Veins. Varicose veins are ugly and embarrassing. As they get bigger, they often start to hurt more.

Pregnancy makes other veins get larger too. Hemorrhoids are also just varicose veins. They can get larger during pregnancy. Veins around the vulva come from inside the abdomen. They can also enlarge when you become pregnant.

Each pregnancy worsens the condition.

In a study of 405 women with Mommy Veins:

  • 13% had one pregnancy
  • 30% had two pregnancies
  • 57% had three pregnancies

Why do you get varicose veins during and after pregnancy?

There are three reasons.

  1. Hormones. With pregnancy, your hormonal balance changes. You develop higher level of the hormone, progestin, which makes your veins dilate more. As your hormones fluctuate, you may get moody. Some women become depressed.

  1. Pressure. The baby sits on your vena cava, which is the major vein in your abdomen. It drains the blood out of your legs. The baby compresses your vena cava sort of like a tourniquet. This blocks the return of blood to your heart from your legs.

3.  Increased blood volume. During pregnancy, your blood volume increases. That extra blood is stored in your veins. The veins in your legs store most of that extra blood volume.

You Don’t Want to Get Your Mother’s Legs

You didn’t have varicose veins when you were ten years old. As you age, they begin to show. If one of your parents had varicose veins, there was a fifty-fifty chance that you would develop varicose veins on the day that you were born.

You could be the cause of your mother’s Mommy Veins.  If both of your parents have varicose veins, your chances of getting them during your lifetime are 90%.

With each pregnancy, your varicose veins get worse. They will not go away or get smaller if you ignore them. They will only worsen over time.

Your Doctor’s Qualifications are Important in Treating Your Mommy Veins

At Kavic Laser & Vein Center, we use the latest treatments in the world. Most other vein doctors in Pittsburgh have not used the very latest treatment called Varithena. We have treated many  patients successfully with this new medicine called Varithena.

As a vascular surgeon, Dr Kavic has no limitations when treating veins. He was trained at the world famous Mayo Clinic in vascular surgery.

Our company made headlines when we recently achieved accreditation for our varicose vein center in the Observer Reporter newspaper.

Varicose vein treatment has shifted from hospitals to offices. Hospitals must be accredited for safety. Hospitals are accredited to make sure your physician working in that hospital has been properly trained in his specialty. It was only a matter of time before office inspections began for veins.

Finally, accreditation of vein center offices has arrived. The Kavic Laser & Vein Center is the only accredited vein office in the city of Pittsburgh.

Conclusion

Bottom line: You don’t want to let your varicose veins go until your legs look like your mother’s legs.

Don’t you want to get back into flip flops and not be embarrassed?

Veins are inherited. Pregnancy just speeds up the process. Don’t wait until your veins get bigger and more difficult to treat.

After delivery, if your Mommy Veins don’t go away after two months, you need to seek treatment.

Dr. Kavic is Pittsburgh’s leading varicose vein specialist who has been treating veins for 30 years. Experience means a lot. So does compassion and care.  We are proud of our reputation as respected vein specialists in our community.
